Bandwidth Managment
Many web masters might never be able to have the pleasure to administer a dedicated server on their own. Dedicated hosting is expensive and even though its prices are also going down, still it is only large sites, which can afford to host on a dedicated server.
What Is Dedicated Hosting?
Dedicated hosting is one of the oldest types of web hosting plans and despite its high prices it is still a very popular option, especially for business hosting. With dedicated hosting a webmaster rents a dedicated server and is given the freedom to administer it the way he or she likes.
In almost any instance of a a dedicated web hosting plan, a webmaster can choose the hardware configuration and/or the operating system for the dedicated server. This is very different from shared web hosting where many users share the same server and they are limited in their choice of options.
Dedicated web hosting has two main types – managed dedicated hosting and unmanaged dedicated hosting. Managed dedicated hosting means that in addition to the physical server a webmaster gets, the web hosting company also offers assistance in managing the server. Almost always this assistance means that the server is entirely managed by the web hosting company but still the webmaster has the say on what to install, how to configure it, etc.
Unmanaged dedicated hosting means that the web hosting company doesn't administer the dedicated server because this is responsibility of the webmaster. Unmanaged dedicated hosting gives a webmaster true freedom to configure the host the way he or she likes it but it is also a demanding type of web hosting because when one doesn't have the time or skills to administer a server, problems are to be expected.
All equal, unmanaged dedicated hosting is cheaper than managed dedicated hosting because a webmaster doesn't pay the fee for administration. However, when a company chooses a dedicated web hosting plan and wants reliability, cost savings from administration are the last concern. The good news is that many web hosting providers offer both managed and unmanaged web hosting packages, so if a company starts with one type and sees that this web hosting plan is not what it needs, it is easy to switch from a managed dedicated server plan to an unmanaged one and vice versa.
