Middle Management Definition

New action movie The Expendables is certainly one of those films that does exactly what it says on the tin. It delivers big action, big explosions and even bigger stars. When Sylvester Stallone roped in the majority of today's and yesteryear's action movie kings he knew that the demographic of males aged 15 to 40 years old would flock to their local multiplexes grunting and gurning.

The general premise of the movie is simple: a group of ex-mercenaries are asked to assist in the overthrowing of a brutal general on a fictional island of Vilena (clearly meant to resemble Cuba). But this flimsy plot is just an excuse for Stallone- who also directs- to return to his Rambo roots and systematically kill the ever expending army of bad guys with the assistance of Transporter star Jason Statham; martial arts legend Jet Li; Red Scorpion Dolph Lundgren and UFC fighter Randy Couture. He also managed to persuade Arnold Schwarzenneger to lace up his boots one more time and provide a two minute cameo.

Script Lacks Depth

Despite the undoubted ability of Sly to eke every last drop of action from his movie the script definitely lacks the depth expected from even the most inane films in 2010. Such lines as "If you don't drop your weapons I'll shoot her in the eye" and "When shall we have dinner?...In a thousand years" are throwbacks to the worst action movies of the 1980s that even Stallone himself shied away from. Even the usually verbally gifted Bruce Willis is reduced to a cliched and unnecessarily mono tongued neanderthal who should have been given at least one smart quip considering he is meant to be a CIA operative.
